“Tis the season of travel and with summer vacations come the meals eaten out and on the go. We all know what it is like to try and eat healthy while eating out. Even with best intentions it is easy to make poor decisions when faced with a large menu of options. We have a few tips to share to help you keep healthy meal choices.
*1. Don’t allow yourself to fall into the “it’s vacation-anything goes” mentality.
We won’t tell you not to splurge while on vacation but keep it in moderation. While the thought of eating (and drinking) whatever you want may seem tempting you will find that you have less energy and feel worse at the end of the week if you fill your meals with endless unhealthy portions.
*2. Choose healthy snacks to have with you during the day. Choose snacks that are tasty and nutritious. Raw almonds are portable and full of fiber and protein. Fresh fruits and veggies are always a good choice in the summer. The options are endless and tasty!
*3. Be sure to drink all your water! When you drink your suggested water intake for the day you will not be plagued with the need to snack so often. Remember that the suggested intake for water is half of your body weight in ounces. If your weight is 140 lbs you should be drinking 70 ounces of water a day.
*4. Get up and move!! Vacation destinations are usually beautiful and the perfect place to go for a family walk or to take a morning run. You will enjoy the sights and burn calories at the same time!
*5. While on your way to your destination you may find yourself sitting in a drive thru line of the nearest fast food restaurant. If you find yourself staring at the endless combo options- keep these tips in mind. Choose grilled chicken or a salad over the fried options. Also opt for bottled water rather than a soda to keep the calories down and the hydration up.
By following these tips you will enjoy a great relaxing vacation while maintaining your healthy lifestyle.
